Today’s Mini-Opinion: Sick Of Congress

In seven West African countries 4493 died from the Ebola virus. The World Health Organization (WHO) says that 8997 cases are confirmed mainly in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. I have a problem with those numbers.
All this time we have been hearing how much safer we are against this terrible disease, because the African nations lack clean water, have a broken medical infrastructure resulting from civil wars and lack funds for clean sheets and food. And yet with all of our advantages we have two Dallas nurses diagnosed with Ebola, ones who cared for the original Ebola patient, Thomas Eric Duncan.
The hospital’s lack of protocol and proper care probably caused the nurses’ illness. But I suspect many hospitals are the same. In any event the disease appears quite easy to catch. So 4493 deaths out of 21 million living in three poor African countries sound far too low. Hopefully Congress hasn’t cut the Center For Disease Control (CDC’s) budget too deeply to handle our situation. Let’s hold Congress’ feet to the fire to fully fund CDC. Now.
