Mini-Opinion: The UnCzar

Is Ron Klain A Good Choice For Ebola Czar?

Why on earth would we want an Ebola Czar to know anything about medicine? After all he’s only dealing with one of the most horrendous diseases in the world. No the President chose Ron Klain who was VP Biden’s former chief of staff, a man who is definitely not a doctor. But man oh man does he know how to cut through all that red tape! Now why didn’t I think of that? Apparently the red tape carries more weight in an Ebola scare than, well, Ebola.

So how do we feel about the Ebola point man being a great paper pusher? Imagine the bright-eyed boy standing up and reassuring us as he performs magic tricks with his special red-tape-cutting scissors. Now don’t you feel better? Uh, no. But Klain has been to the doctor once. Doesn’t that count? Nope.

Sure Klain can motivate medical providers to get in shape. That’s good. But a great deal of the Ebola Czar’s purpose is to reassure us, the citizens of the US. We want someone to tell us how to prevent Ebola from knocking on our doors. And I would rather hear that from a physician who knows how to shape up the healthcare system than one who tells VP Biden his daily schedule. Surely there is one doctor out there who can cut through red tape. Just one? What about Dr. Howard Dean (D-Vt.), former governor of Vermont?

What’s next? A Surgeon General who is actually a physician?
